22. Moses (Musa) - Manna & Quail
· Read in The Qur’an – 2:57, 7:160, 2:61, 2:67
· Read in The Tanakh and The Bible - Exodus 25-31:11; Numbers 13:1-14:45; Joshua 1:1-6:27; Psalm 78:23–41; Psalm 105:40; Nehemiah 9:17–21; John 6:32–35; John 6:47–51; 1 Corinthians 10:1–13; Revelation 2:17
Readings from The Qur’an:
· The Qur'an 2:57. “And We shaded you with clouds and sent down on you Al-Manna and the quails, (saying): "Eat of the good lawful things We have provided for you," (but they rebelled). And they did not wrong Us but they wronged themselves.”
· The Qur'an 7:160. And We divided them into twelve tribes (as distinct) nations. We revealed to Musa (Moses) when his people asked him for water (saying): "Strike the stone with your stick", and there gushed forth out of it twelve springs, each group knew its own place for water. We shaded them with the clouds and sent down upon them AI-Manna and the quails (saying): "Eat of the good things with which We have provided you." They harmed Us not but they used to harm themselves.
· How is sin both a wrong against God and ourselves?
· The Qur'an 2:61 “And (remember) when you said, "O Musa (Moses)! We cannot endure one kind of food. So invoke your Lord for us to bring forth for us of what the earth grows, its herbs, its cucumbers, its Fum (wheat or garlic), its lentils and its onions." He said, "Would you exchange that which is better for that which is lower? Go you down to any town and you shall find what you want!" And they were covered with humiliation and misery, and they drew on themselves the Wrath of Allah. That was because they used to disbelieve the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations etc.) of Allah and killed the Prophets wrongfully. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress the bounds (in their disobedience to Allah, i.e. commit crimes and sins).”

· The Qur'an 2:67 “And (remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his people: "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said, "I take Allah's Refuge from being among Al-Jahilun (the ignorant or the foolish).””

Readings from The Tanakh and The Bible:
· Psalm 78:23–41 “Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, [24] and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. [25] Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance. [26] He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind; [27] he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas; [28] he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings. [29] And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved. [30] But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, [31] the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. [32] In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. [33] So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. [34] When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. [35] They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. [36] But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. [37] Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. [38] Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. [39] He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. [40] How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert! [41] They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.”
· Psalm 105:40 “They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.”
· Nehemiah 9:17–21 “They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. [18] Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies, [19] you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go. [20] You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. [21] Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.”
· John 6:32–35 “Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. [33] For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” [34] They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” [35] Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
· John 6:47–51 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. [48] I am the bread of life. [49] Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. [50] This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. [51] I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
· 1 Corinthians 10:1–13 “For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, [2] and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, [3] and all ate the same spiritual food, [4] and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. [5] Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. [6] Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. [7] Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” [8] We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. [9] We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, [10] nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. [11] Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. [12] Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. [13] No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
· Revelation 2:17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’”
