3. Adam and Eve (Adam and Hawwa)

In the beginning God created angels. He created the animals, the birds, and the fish in the sea. He also made the first man. From the first man, He created the first woman, and he made them in His image. In His image, He created Adam and Eve, very real people: the first man the first woman. They walked with God and they talked with God, and experienced Him in amazing ways. There was no death or disease, but Satan, he came and he tempted them. He tempted them with their eyes, the desires the eyes. He tempted them in their flesh for the desires of the flesh. He tempted them towards pride, to think they knew better than God. Just like Satan rebelled against God. we have rebelled against God in our sin. Our sin is serious. Adam and Eve were cast out of the presence of God. In the same way, our relationship with God is broken by our sin.

·      Read in The Qur’an – 2:31, 3:31, 3:59, 3:190, 4:1, 6:2, 15:26, 18:37, 22:5, 30:20, 37:11, 7:98, 7:189, 8:11-13, 15:26-29, 16:4, 18:37

·      Read in The Tanakh and The Bible - Genesis 2:7-3:24

Readings from The Qur’an:

·      The Qur'an 2:31 “And He taught Adam all the names (of everything), then He showed them to the angels and said, ‘Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.’”

·      Why is an interaction between Adam and angels not in the Bible, 2,000 years before the Qur’an?

·      How is the description in the Qur’an 2:31 different from what is written in the Tanakh and Bible in Genesis 2:19?

·      Genesis 2:19 “Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.”

·      The Qur'an 3:31. “Allah chose Adam, Nub (Noah), the family of Ibrahim (Abraham) and the family of 'Imran above the 'Alamin (mankind and jinn) (of their times).”

·      The Qur'an 3:59. “Verily, the likeness of 'Isa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: "Be!" - and he was.

·      Why does the Tanakh and Bible repeatedly speak to the creation of Adam but never mentions Jesus as being created? Why would such a statement be unique to the Qur’an?

·      Why does the Bible speak about Jesus as the Creator of all things if the Qur’an says he was created?

·      The Qur'an 3:190 “Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.”

·      The Qur'an 4:1. “O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women”

·      The Qur'an 6:2 “He it is Who has created you from clay”

·      The Qur'an 15:26 “And indeed, We created man from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud.”

·      The Qur’an 18:37, 22:5, 30:20 “created you out of (from) dust”

·      The Qur’an 37:11 “created them of a sticky clay.”

·      Why does the Qur’an sometimes say clay, mud, and dust? Why are more details of Adam and Eve’s creation not given in The Qur’an?

·      The Qur'an 7:98 “It is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and has given you a place of residing (on the earth or in your mother's wombs) and a place of storage [in the earth (in your graves) or in your father's loins]. Indeed, We have explained in detail Our revelations (this Qur'an) for people who understand.”

·      The Qur'an 7:189 “It is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and (then) He has created from him his wife [Hawwa' (Eve)], in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her.”

·      What similarities and differences do you see about the accounts of Adam and Eve’s creation in the Qur’an, the Tanakh, and the Bible?

·      The Qur'an 8:11-13 “And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being); then We told the angels, "Prostrate yourselves to Adam", and they prostrated themselves, except Iblis (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrated themselves. 12. (Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate yourself, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay." 13. (Allah) said: "(O Iblis) get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced.”

·      The Qur'an 15:26-29. “And indeed, We created man from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud. 27. And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire.  28. And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud.  29."So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him.”

·      The Qur'an 15: 30 “So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together”

·      Why is there no mention of jinn in the Tanakh and Bible? Why is there no accounts of angels, jinn, or Satan’s creation from fire in the Tanakh and Bible?

·      The Qur'an 16:4 “He has created man from Nutfah (mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge)”

·      The Qur'an 18:37. “His companion said to him during the talk with him: "Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you out of dust (i.e. your father Adam), then out of Nutfah (mixed semen drops of male and female discharge), then fashioned you into a man?”

·      Why is this description of reproduction given rather than the biblical references to the “womb” and becoming “one flesh”?

Readings from The Tanakh and The Bible:

·      Genesis 2:7–25 “then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. [8] And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. [9] And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” [10] A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. [11] The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. [12] And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. [13] The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. [14] And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. [15] The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. [16] And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, [17] but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” [18] Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” [19] Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. [20] The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. [21] So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. [22] And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. [23] Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” [24] Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. [25] And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”

·      In reading this account of creation of Adam and Eve from the Tanakh and Bible, what differences do you see from the Qur’an? Which account is more complete? Which account is easier to understand? Why do you think there are so many differences between the books?
