31. Job (Ayyub)

Job is a man who loses just about everything in his life, his children, his property and possessions, and his health. His wife and his children turn against him with sinful and wrong advice.  In the background God reveals that Satan is directly attacking Job.  While Job makes some mistakes in his responses to God, Job is steadfast in his faithfulness to God in spite of overwhelming suffering.  Through Job we see an example of righteousness despite Satan’s persistent attacks.

·      Read in The Qur’an - 4:163, 6:83-86, 21:83-84

·      Read in The Tanakh and The Bible - Job 1:1, 1:21, Job 2:10, Job 42:12

Readings from The Qur’an:

·      The Qur'an 4:163 “We (also) sent the revelation to…Ayyub (Job)”

·      The Qur'an 6:83-86 “We guided…Ayyub (Job)…each one of them was of the righteous…We preferred above the 'Alamin [mankind and jinn (of their times)].

·      Since the Qur’an says revelation and guidance came to Ayyub (Job), and through the Torat (Torah), shouldn’t Muslims know the full story of Ayyub (Job), given in the Tanakh and Bible?

·      The Qur’an 21:83-84 “And (remember) Ayyub (Job), when he cried to his Lord: ‘Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.’ 84. So We answered his call, and We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his family to him (that he had lost) and the like thereof along with them as a mercy from Ourselves and a Reminder for all those who worship Us.”

·      Why does the Bible not have Job saying what the Qur’an claims he says in the Qur’an 21:83?

·      While the Bible describes Job’s health and wealth as being restored (Job 42:10), it does not describe the restoration of his dead sons and daughters.  Why does the Qur’an 21:84 say “We restored his family to him (that he had lost)”?

Readings from The Tanakh and The Bible:

·      Job 1:1 “There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.”

·      Job 1:21 “And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

·      Job 2:10 “But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.”

·      Job 42:12 “And the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.”
